24kGoldn is honest about how he let fame and success get to his head in his most vulnerable song yet. His new single, “Good Intentions” tells his story about his mistakes and how they’ve cost him his mental health and relationships.
24kGoldn confesses that he’s going through a rut and has let his attention-seeking ways take over in the first verse. “If I’m bein’ honest, I’ve been goin’ through a rut, uh / Victim of my selfishness, it’s finally catchin’ up, uh / Money over love, b**ches doin’ drugs /When you gettin’ famous, they gon’ shower you with love / Copy-pastin’ compliments, don’t mean a single one / I’m addicted to attention, anything to catch a buzz, uh”.
In the second verse, 24kGoldn talks about how he lost his friends and how others reacted to him changing for the worse. “I had good intentions ’til I started slippin’ up, uh / Lust took over love, now look at where we ended up / With the only one who really know me blockin’ mе for months, uh.” His mom is still proud of him for making it out of the mud, but she doesn’t know what he’s become.
His ways and how people reacted to them caused his mental health to decline, causing him to feel depressed and emotionally numb simultaneously. He then reflects on his career highs from 2021. “Plaques on every wall, but they from 2021/ Take a picture, smoke a Swisher, reminisce on how it was, uh / Wipin’ off the tears, up, pickin’ up the crumbs, uh / I had good intentions ’til I started slippin’ up, uh”.
24kGoldn’s melodic flows are both solemn and optimistic, as the song takes a positive turn near the end when he realizes he’s not in too deep and can change. “Every story ends, but it ain’t over ’til it’s done / Ain’t too late to change your life and be exactly what you want.” He lets listeners and loved ones know that he’s still a good guy who’s made a few mistakes and that he’s still reputable. “I’m golden, you know that / Take a look at my heart, take a glance at me / I’m golden, you know that / Take a shot in the dark, take a chance on me”.
The simple production of “Good Intentions” illustrates its introspective nature, with bold 808s and ad-libs in the background that set the mood, while still letting the lyrics speak. The chord progression before the outro makes the song intricate and goes with the redemptive lyrics of it. In the music video, 24kGoldn goes on a scenic road trip with two friends to reflect on his journey in life. At the end of the video, he burns his old plaques and makes room for a rebirth of himself.
“Good Intentions” teaches listeners that humans are flawed in nature, but we can always redeem and reinvent ourselves. Listen to this song when you’re in a rut or self-loathing for motivation and encouragement to keep going.
24kGoldn is going through growing pains in his life and career, but we can’t wait to see what he does this year.
